Texas Chainsaw Massacre Trailer Analysis

Texas Chainsaw Massacre Trailer Analysis

After watching the trailer to this well known horror movie it is very clear that the film is aimed at the older generation and that there target audience would not be anyone below the age of 15 as it clearly has a lot of graphic scenes that younger viewers would find very disturbing. So I think that the target audience for this film ranges from the age of 18 up to around 25 as these are the ages where your going to get teenagers and young adults who enjoy watching these type of gory, scary films for the thrill of it. right from the start you can see that it is a typical horror film as you see that the film is based around a group of vulnerable teenagers who are going away for the weekend this is a typical stereotype for horror films because a group of teenagers are easy to use because they could be thought as young and helpless. Normally films use voice overs in their trailers to tell the audience about the story or about credit information this is not done in this trailer however there are conversations between the characters that give away some of the story to help us the audience understand more about what is going to happen in the film. The film makers edit the trailer in a way so that they make the characters have one liner conversations this gives away some of the plot but it also creates tension by using these one liners as it leaves the audience on the edge of their seats waiting to see what comes after the one liner comments. At the start of the trailer the audience are taken of the scent that it is a horror movie because the trailer starts off by playing calming relaxing music which is not a stereotype of horror movies, however later on in the trailer the pace of the music played builds up and creates tension as we find out more about what the film is about and that it is a horror film.
At about a minute into the trailer key points start to be conveyed through titles and we are told about the history of the house that the teenagers are about to move into for a summer vacation. This is effective because it is letting the audience know some information that characters do not know themselves. It then makes us the audience want to watch the film when its is released because we want to see what is going to happen after being told a couple of key points that have interested us. When the action starts to pick up halfway through the trailer there are much more dramatic camera angles that are used to create tension through the action packed scenes. Editing has also been used to give the trailer a jumpy feel and to get the audience really scared when the action is happening which in turn will excite them and then make them want to watch the film when it is released in the cinema. The title for the film is not shown until right at the end of the trailer, a reason for leaving the title right until the end is because it makes the audience watch the whole trailer to get the name of the film. So if you are interested in it you are made to watch the whole trailer just to get to the name of the film which is the information that you as the audience need. The film makers have included a montage of different shots in this trailer this is used to show the most dramatic part of the film and put it all into about 30 seconds. This is when the teenagers find out that they aren't living alone inside the house. This is when the trailer is at the most tense part and it is also the most important part of the trailer as it sells the film to the target audience.
