There are many connotations all over this film poster. As you can see from the poster below that the women who is on the poster has got bright red eyes. They have been made this colour because it shows death and also blood. This is because this film is very gory and graphic so the red is used to connote blood to tell the audience it is going to be gory. You can also see from the film poster that there is a large image of a moth that is covering the women mouth, on the moth there is a skull which once again connotes death. So from most of this film poster it is clear that it connotes death which shows that the type of film is going to be a horror film. The moth covering her mouth can also link to the title of the film 'the silence of the lambs' this is because silence can be related to the fact that the moth is covering her mouth stopping her being able to talk. This makes the audience wonder what the purpose of the moth is within the film and also why the character on the poster is unable to speak and what relation this has to the film. From the poster you can also see that most of the picture is black and white which are both very dull colours. however the woman is very pale so pale that she is almost white. This could show that she is almost dead or maybe is dead as this is what happens to your skin when you are unwell or even dead.
The positioning of the images on the poster are very central this is because the film makers want these images to be the first thing that the audience sees so that it drags them in and gets them interested and asking questioning about the film. This is what most film makers do when creating film posters because they feel like that it is the most effective way of promoting their film and getting people to be interested in it and wanting to watch it. Behind the image of the women's face there is just a dark background this is very simple yet very effective, the dark background creates a dark gloomy feel almost mysterious to the audience. The text for what the title of the film is written in is once again very simple it is bold and it stands out so even though it is very plain and ordinary it is very effective as it stands out to the audiences in a clear bright red as well which once again connotes death or even love which seems to be the main theme of this film poster. The characters from the film have been included on the film poster because this is another thing that gets the audiences interested and wanting to watch the film. When they see the well known names of the actors they will automatically think that this film is going to be good because of the star actors that are in the film that basically promote film. However some film posters don't always use the characters name, they instead include a large image of the main characters to show in a clearer way who is in the film whereas this film poster does not do this as we are unable to tell who is in the film from the poster that we have.
There are a couple of questions that we are left asking about the film poster. The first one is who is the actual person on the film poster, they must be very important as they are the main image upon the film poster but i want to know what role they play in this horror movie and is it a significant role? The second question that I need answering is what is the point of the moth that is covering her mouth and why is it covering her mouth does she hold any secrets? The last and final question that I am left asking is if you look very closely to the women's nostrils the one on her left is larger than the one on her right so why is this and does it have anything to do with the story of the film?
